Law District Alternative

Specialist UK contracts in 60 seconds. Not a general document builder.

Law District covers many document types broadly. Contracto covers contractor, freelancer, and recruiter contracts in depth — with IR35 clause logic and UK statutory accuracy that a general platform cannot replicate.

Why a specialist platform outperforms a general document builder for contractors

Law District is a general legal document platform. It covers a broad range of documents — employment contracts, wills, tenancy agreements, business letters — alongside contractor and freelance templates. This breadth is an advantage for businesses that need occasional access to many document types. It is a disadvantage for contractors, freelancers, and recruiters who need deep, accurate clause coverage in a narrow domain.

Contracto covers five contract types (Freelance, IR35 Services Agreement, NDA, Consulting Agreement, Recruiter Terms of Business) and generates each one with UK-specific clause logic. The IR35 Services Agreement, for example, requires a genuinely limited right of substitution, an explicit no-mutuality-of-obligation clause, and a Status Determination Statement provision — none of which a general document template will contain correctly.

If you are a UK contractor, freelancer, or recruiter, a platform built for your specific use case will produce more accurate, enforceable documents than a general builder.

The difference between "contract language" and UK statutory accuracy

Most general document builders produce legally plausible-sounding contracts. The gap shows up in the statutes. A late payment clause that says "interest will accrue on overdue invoices" is legally weaker than one that cites the Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998 by name, specifies the rate (8% above Bank of England base rate), and references the fixed compensation tiers (£40 for debts under £1,000, £70 for debts between £1,000 and £9,999, £100 for debts of £10,000 and above).

The same applies to IP. A clause that says "the client owns all work product" is different from one that specifies when IP vests (on full payment, not on delivery), what it excludes (pre-existing tools, methodologies, general professional skills), and how it interacts with CDPA 1988 moral rights.

Contracto generates contracts with these statutory references embedded. Law District's general templates use generic clause language without UK-specific statutory anchoring.

IR35 — the missing contract type

Law District does not offer an IR35 Services Agreement. For the 700,000+ UK contractors working through a Personal Service Company, this is the most critical contract gap. Since the off-payroll working rules were extended to the private sector in April 2021, medium and large engagers are required to issue a Status Determination Statement. Contractors need contracts that actively evidence outside-IR35 status: substitution rights that cannot be vetoed on personal grounds, no mutuality of obligation between engagements, and control over method and delivery.

A generic services agreement or consulting agreement — the closest available in a general document builder — will not contain this language and will not support an outside-IR35 determination under HMRC scrutiny.

Contracto's IR35 Services Agreement is built specifically for this scenario, with clause logic that maps directly to the three HMRC status tests.

Subscription vs pay-per-contract

Law District, like most document platforms, uses a subscription model. Access to downloadable documents requires an active subscription. If you need one contract per quarter, the annual subscription cost exceeds the cost of three or four £9 Contracto contracts by a significant margin.

Contracto's model: generate free with a watermark preview (so you can see exactly what you are getting before committing), then pay £9 per clean PDF. No subscription required unless your volume (Every Deal: 30 contracts/month, £29) or your team's needs (Agency: 150 contracts/month, £49) justify it.
